Sideroblastic anaemia with iron overload presenting as an arthropathy.

چکیده
We report on 2 patients with sideroblastic anaemia an secondary iron overload whose presenting symptom was an arthropathy of small an large joints. One patient had marked spinal symptoms which were severe enough to suggest ankylosing spondylitis, and the pattern of arthritis in the other resembled seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. We believe these to be the first cases described of an arthropathy associated with iron overload secondary to sideroblastic anaemia.

Iron overload despite partial gastrectomy.
Iron overload was found in 3 patients who had undergone partial gastrectomy: a 61-year-old woman developed iron overload because she may have had idiopathic haemochromatosis and had also been given parenteral iron; in a 62-year-old man with thalassaemia minor, iron overload may have developed because of increased oral iron ingestion, low serum folate, increased, albeit ineffective, erythropoies...
متن کاملCongenital sideroblastic anaemia in two girls.
Transfusion dependent congenital sideroblastic anaemia occurred in infancy in two unrelated girls. One girl developed early organ failure which was not prevented by standard chelation treatment. The combination of modest iron burden and putative intrinsic mitochondrial dysfunction could have accounted for the clinical picture. The other girl remained well, receiving regular transfusion and stan...
متن کاملIdentification and key management of non-transfusion-dependent thalassaemia patients: not a rare but potentially under-recognised condition
Patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassaemia (NTDT) have a genetic defect or combination of defects that affect haemoglobin synthesis, but which is not severe enough to require regular blood transfusions. The carrier frequency of NTDT is high (up to 80% in some parts of the world) but the prevalence of symptomatic patients varies with geography and is estimated to be from 1 in 100,000 t...
متن کاملOnset of X-linked sideroblastic anemia in the fourth decade.
We report the case of a 40-year female who manifested late onset, pyridoxine-refractory X-linked sideroblastic anemia, heterozygous for the first described frameshift ALAS2 mutation, CD506-507 (-C). On presentation she had macrocytic anemia with severe iron overload.
متن کاملA Novel Hemizygous I418S Mutation in the ALAS2 Gene in a Young Korean Man with X-Linked Sideroblastic Anemia
Dear Editor, Sideroblastic anemia is a heterogeneous disorder that is characterized by increased serum iron and ferritin levels, high number of hypochromic red blood cells (RBCs), and ineffective erythropoiesis with ringed sideroblasts in the bone marrow (BM) [1]. There are two forms of sideroblastic anemia: inherited and acquired. Acquired sideroblastic anemia usually develops because of alcoh...
